Cardiothoracic Imaging Fellowship

Heart imaging

Site(s): Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) & UBC Hospital (UBCH)

Overview

The Cardiothoracic Imaging Fellowship at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH), University of British Columbia, is a 12-month (July 1st to June 30th) combined fellowship in Thoracic and Cardiac Imaging.

Vancouver General Hospital is the quaternary care center for the Province of British Columbia for thoracic surgery and lung transplantation and offers a high volume of training experience in thoracic and cardiac imaging. VGH is the largest teaching hospital affiliated with UBC, and also an Adult Level 1 Trauma Centre for British Columbia and home to the Dilawri Cardiovascular Institute. We have three MRI scanners and four cardiac capable CT scanners with post-processing on SyngoVia stations.

The Cardiothoracic Radiology Department works in close collaboration with the Departments of thoracic surgery, respirology, cardiology, and pathology.

Cardiothoracic Imaging Fellows will obtain comprehensive and advanced training in all aspects of inpatient and outpatient thoracic imaging, including oncology, interstitial lung disease, lung transplantation, hematological malignancy, and stem cell transplantation. We perform over 12,000 thoracic CTs per year.

Fellows are trained to be competent in performing transthoracic CT-guided lung biopsies and pre-operative fuzzy wire localization.

Working with both radiologists and cardiologists, fellows will be trained and become skilled in the post-processing and interpretation of a large number of Cardiac CT examinations, including coronary CT angiography and coronary calcium score CT, preoperative assessment for pulmonary vein ablation, left atrial appendage closure and transcatheter valve implantation. Over 4500 Cardiac CTs are performed at our institution per year. Fellows will achieve at a minimum Level II Certification by the end of the fellowship.

Fellows are also trained to protocol, interpret and process inpatient and outpatient cardiac and thoracic MRIs, including ischemic heart disease with viability assessment, myocarditis, cardiomyopathies, infiltrative disorders, cardiac and mediastinal masses.

Cardiothoracic Imaging fellows attend and participate in multidisciplinary conferences on a regular basis, including Interstitial Lung Disease rounds, Cardiology rounds, Lung ablation rounds, Combined Radiology-Respirology-Pathology rounds, Peer Learning rounds and Radiology grand rounds.

Fellows are provided protected academic time to participate in academic endeavors, including clinical and basic research projects, and to publish manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals. Protected academic time (one week) is provided to attend one conference.  Fellows presenting at a conference can qualify for conference funding.

Vancouver General Hospital is centrally located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Vancouver is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and has consistently been ranked as one of the best places in the world to live.
