Interventional Neuroradiology Fellowship

Site(s): Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) & British Columbia Children’s Hospital (BCCH)

Overview

Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) is a 950-bed tertiary referral center just outside the downtown core of picturesque Vancouver, British Columbia. It is the primary patient care, teaching, and research hospital in British Columbia. VGH is a level I trauma center and a major referral center for several specialties, with ten staff neurosurgeons, 25 neurologists, a dedicated acute stroke service, and a world-class spine surgical service. Patient care in Interventional Neuroradiology is provided by a team of 4 interventionally trained Neuroradiologists and two interventionally trained Vascular Neurosurgeons.

The Interventional Neuroradiology fellowship is a two-year fellowship with two fully funded positions. On an individual basis, depending on prior training and professional goals, a one-year fellowship (“stroke fellowship”) can alternatively be arranged.

Fellows are expected to have completed a Diagnostic Neuroradiology fellowship program and, ideally, have had some basic catheter training, including groin access. Applicants with prior fellowship training in neurosurgery, stroke neurology, or interventional radiology might also be considered.

Fellows will become proficient in the full scope of interventional practice, including cerebral and spinal diagnostic angiography, treatment for acute ischemic stroke, hemorrhage, aneurysms, and vascular malformations. Spinal interventions such as tumor embolization, vertebroplasty, other spine pain procedures, and sclerotherapy for head & neck vascular malformations are also part of the spectrum. The fellowship will also provide the trainee to participate in elected pediatric INR cases at BCCH.

Fellows will also be engaged with Diagnostic imaging, focusing on vascular and spinal CT and MR imaging as the basis for interventional procedures, interacting with our Diagnostic Neuroradiology staff and fellow team.

Weekly interdisciplinary rounds include stroke and interesting case rounds, occasional attendance at neurosurgery, spine surgery, head & neck cancer, and grand rounds in neurosciences. Dedicated research/academic time is provided, and fellows will be expected to complete at least one academic project per year during their fellowship. Fellows will provide at-home neuroradiology calls on a 1-in-4 rotation, with staff neuroradiologist backup.
