Nuclear Medicine Residency Program

The program offers a dynamic and comprehensive training experience designed to prepare residents for successful careers in nuclear medicine.

We offer an accredited 2-year Competency by Design (CBD) program following the training experience and Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA) by the Royal College. Residents are required to have completed or be enrolled in a Royal College-accredited Diagnostic Radiology Residency prior to joining our program.

Our program offers extensive training in general nuclear medicine, high-volume PET/CT imaging, and cutting-edge theranostics. In addition, we provide a robust foundation in the basic sciences, including radiation safety, nuclear physics, radiobiology, and radiopharmacy. Residents will have the opportunity to engage in teaching activities, participate in the Joint UBC-Stanford Journal Club, and attend weekly Grand Rounds, fostering a collaborative learning environment. Through our comprehensive curriculum and diverse training locations, we prepare residents for successful careers as proficient and compassionate nuclear medicine physicians.

Curriculum and Tailored Training

The curriculum, structured on a 1-year cycle, ensures residents complete all required Training Experiences before their exams. Residents can tailor their training by selecting rotations based on their career interests, including clinical rotations such as Non-Oncology PET, Pediatrics, Community and more. The academic half-day comprises didactic teaching, journal clubs, interdisciplinary courses, workshops, and practice oral exams, providing a well-rounded educational experience.

Residents will have frequent opportunities for assessment, including semi-annual oral and written examinations, ABNM In-training examination, and evaluations based on EPA completion and end-of-rotation ITERs. ACLS certification is mandatory throughout the program and is supported by the program.

Enriched Training Experience

Residents will be trained rotating through sites such as Vancouver General Hospital, St Paul’s Hospital, BC Children’s Hospital, British Columbia Cancer Agency, and others. Residents also have the opportunity to undertake rotations at an external site, such as Ottawa Heart Institute or University of Alberta. Elective rotations are also available at peripheral centers, enriching residents’ training experience.

Research

Research is a pivotal component of our program, with residents required to undertake a scholarly project. Research electives are available for those interested, under the guidance of research supervisors and the Program Director. Residents also receive teaching around clinical audit projects.
