Interventional Radiology Fellowship

Overview

The University of British Columbia currently offers four fellowship positions in Interventional Radiology (IR). These positions incorporate both vascular and nonvascular interventions. Rotations are based in Vancouver General Hospital (VGH), which is the primary site, and University of British Columbia Hospital (UBCH). VGH is the second largest hospital in Canada comprising a total of over 1000 beds and provides specialist services such as transplantation (lung, liver and kidney), advanced surgical oncology, complex aortic disease and trauma.

Successful candidates will be active participants in multi-disciplinary meetings (Liver tumor board, joint Vascular Surgery/IR, TEVAR, Renovascular and Renal cell cancer rounds). The Fellowship aims to provide clinical experience in patient management. Fellows will be extensively involved in the outpatient consultation service through the weekly IR Clinic, provide regular consults for vascular anomalies and fibroid/varicocele embolizations as well as for inpatients referrals. Diagnostic duties will include vascular imaging (CT and MRI) as well as genitourinary imaging for the combined Urology/IR stone center.

The Fellowship provides a comprehensive exposure to interventional oncology including transarterial chemoembolization, Yttrium-90 (Y90) radioembolization, and percutaneous tumor ablation (radiofrequency, microwave and cryoablation). Vascular procedures include vascular access, hemodialysis fistulae, IVC filter insertion, extremity deep venous thrombolysis, pulmonary embolus catheter directed thrombolysis and peripheral vascular angioplasty/stenting. Embolization for acute pathologies (such as gastrointestinal hemorrhage, trauma) as well as elective (for instance uterine artery, varicocele and portal vein embolizations) are performed. Procedures for management of portal hypertension with transjugular portosystemic shunt creation, variceal and portosystemic shunt embolization are offered. The IR service is involved in thoracic endovascular stent grafts in both the elective and emergent setting. The local practice for vascular anomalies is the largest in western Canada, with dedicated interventional lists for angiographic assessment and treatment.

Non-vascular procedures include gastrointestinal intervention (visceral stenting, hepatobiliary intervention, gastrostomy tube insertion), genitourinary intervention (percutaneous stone tracts, nephrostomy tube insertion, stenting), fluoroscopic spinal injections (epidural, nerve root, facet joint) and women’s fertility (hysterosalpingograms, fallopian tube recanalization).

Completion of an audit will be expected prior to completion of the fellowship. Involvement in a research project or publication will be strongly encouraged and there will be ample opportunities and guidance provided by the faculty. Funding is available for conference attendance.

Applicants must have a medical degree and specialty diploma (Radiology) or be completing an accredited residency program in diagnostic radiology to be eligible for licensure in Canada.

The IR Fellowship program considers its fellowship to be distinct and unique from diagnostic fellowships. As such, it is important to indicate your interest in IR as “the first choice” only in your online application. Please note that applying for any other Radiology Fellowship will exclude applicants from the IR fellowship.
