The Department of Radiology administers departmental funding to support research initiatives. This financial support, offered in the form of internal research awards, is provided on a competitive basis in recognition of scientific merit.

UBC Department of Radiology Trainee Open Science Awards
The Department of Radiology Trainee Open Science Awards support research activities with the goal to increase open science expertise and outputs from trainees within the Dept of Radiology.

Eligibility:
- Trainee’s supervisor must have a primary/direct appointment in the Dept. of Radiology, or an Associate Membership in the Dept with demonstrable regular contributions to departmental activities in research, academic service, teaching, or clinical service.
- Trainee members include but are not limited to students, residents, fellows, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, etc.
- Trainees must have at least 6 months left in their program after the start of this award term.
- Trainees may only receive this award once per degree/fellowship/residency.
Eligible activities include:
- Travel & registration fees for a trainee to attend a professional development conference or workshop about open science, or to present their open science analysis pipeline or dataset,
- Hourly compensation for time for a trainee to perform one or more of the following
(a) polish and document code for a tool to be shared openly (such as on GitHub) including preparing demo tutorials and other supporting resources;
(b) to prepare a dataset to be shared openly such as sharing online or with an interactive summary via Steamlit; and/or
(c) collaborate between a clinical and a fundamental scientist or statistician to prepare an analysis for a dataset to be shared openly,
- Fees for publication in an open access journal.
- Supervisors must ensure that trainees complete the award conditions listed below.
Application Windows: Applications will be accepted twice per year, in Spring and Fall. 4 awards are available in each round, a total of 8 awards per year.
Selection Procedure: Applications will be reviewed to ensure all eligibility criteria have been met, then all eligible applications will be placed in a lottery for winners to be drawn at random.

Recognize support from the Dept of Radiology in any publications and deliverables that are produced by this project.
Prepare a 15 minute presentation with a project update to be shared at the Radiology Grand Rounds before Feb, 2027
Submit an approximately 500 word final report with links to any deliverables by Feb 28, 2027

The UBC Department of Radiology AI Research Grants are designed to support research and innovation in AI/ML applications in medical imaging. These grants aim to foster cutting-edge research, enhance education and training, and inspire ongoing excellence in AI-driven imaging and intervention research within the this Department.

Awarded to fundamental science trainees (undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral fellows) presenting research projects which are considered the most deserving, based on content, scientific methodology, and presentation.

People’s Choice Presentation Awards
Awarded to fundamental science trainees (undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral fellows) presenting research projects which are voted to be the most deserving by the Research Day attendees.

Resident Awards
Dr. Brian W. Goodacre Award
The prize will support the cost of presenting the winning research project at a scientific meeting such as ‘Society of Interventional Radiology.
Awarded to a radiology resident with the highest cumulative score on his/her Interventional Radiology presentation, which is based on excellence in scientific design, clear presentation of data, validity of discussion, and clarity of oral presentation. Interventional Radiology topics could include vascular and non-vascular topics, or advanced biopsy techniques.
- Award Amount: $3,200
Dr. Peter Poon Memorial Research Award
It is anticipated that the funds awarded will be used to off-set the costs for statistical data analysis, laboratory or imaging time, or raw materials used in such endeavors.
This award is for radiology residents who have started a project but are still acquiring data or have a hypothesis generated and experimental design confirmed. The aim of the award is to encourage original hypothesis-driven research in which Residents are the principal investigator or co-investigator. This is a research-in-progress award. The hypothesis, experimental design and data collection methodology should be clearly stated, but no data needs be presented.
- Award Amount: $1,700
Dr. Gordon E. Trueman Award
Awarded to those residents’ completed projects which are considered the most deserving, based on content, scientific methodology, and presentation. Evidence-based conclusions should be presented.

Dr. Robert Wallace Boyd Award
Awarded to the resident with the most promising hypothesis-driven research proposal in the field of imaging/intervention. Data is not required at time of submission to be eligible for this award.
