Overview:
BC Cancer Breast Imaging Fellowship is a dedicated one-year breast imaging program currently accepting 1-2 fellows annually. A six-month fellowship option can be considered upon request. Both funded and sponsored positions are available. Applicants should either have completed or are eligible to write certification exams administered by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the American Board of Radiology, or an equivalent certifying institution in their home country.
The BC Cancer Vancouver Breast imaging division serves multiple key roles in breast screening, surveillance, and managing patients in Vancouver and across the province. The department acts as a tertiary referral center for the review of complex breast imaging cases across the province, multimodality breast biopsies, clip placement, and image-guided pre-operative localization procedures. BC Cancer Vancouver is the only center in the province offering prone table stereotactic and tomosynthesis-guided biopsies and is one of the select centers offering MRI-guided breast biopsies and contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM). We are part of the BC Cancer Breast Screening Program and a major screening breast MRI referral center for women at high risk for breast malignancy.
Upon completion of the program, the trainee will be able to demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of clinical decision-making and interpretive skills in breast imaging, including the BI-RADS lexicon and ACR appropriateness criteria pertaining to mammography, tomosynthesis, contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM), ultrasound, and breast MRI. Fellows will have abundant experience in image-guided breast interventions, including ultrasound-guided FNA, core biopsies using ultrasound, stereotactic, tomosynthesis, and MRI guidance, as well as pre-operative image-guided localization utilizing fine wire and Molli clips. Optional elective time in partnering breast imaging departments in Vancouver will provide exposure to community breast imaging.
As part of our team, fellows are expected to take on a central role in running clinical breast imaging services, performing procedures, handling consults, checking and interpreting studies. They are actively involved in teaching medical students, radiology residents, and learners from other specialties rotating through BC Cancer. Fellows are expected to participate and present their cases at the weekly Radiology-Pathology correlation and multidisciplinary breast conferences, an essential experience shaping a future colleague, a collaborator, and a patient advocate. A minimum of one research or quality improvement project is a requirement in a one-year program with up to one month of research time provided.
